It’s official: Star Wars going 3-D in 2012

Well, they’re finally going through with it: The saga will be coming to theaters in 3-D in 2012, starting with The Phantom Menace. Although May seems the obvious choice, LFL is not committing to any dates or even a season for TPM, let alone the other 5 films. “The process is really extensive, and we want to make sure each of the films gets the attention it needs,” Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale told USA Today.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter claims “each of the films would be released in order at the same time each consecutive year, depending on how well the first re-release does.” Hrm.

MORNING (9/29) UPDATE: Variety delves deeper into the situation with the techies. Most notably, John Knoll says that no other visual effects will be tweaked or added.

  1. Ugh. Am I the only one who can’t STAND 3D? Gives me a headache. My eyes don’t combine the images into one without an extreme amount of effort. So I’ll take a pass on this one, unless they do a corresponding 2D re-release. Then I’ll take the kids.

  2. At long last! The films return to the big screen! As for the 3D, if they can pull it off well, then I’ll be pleased, but either way, any excuse to get them back in theaters works for me.

  3. Is that no new additions beyond what’s happening for the Blu-ray?

Because I think things like digital Yoda in Phantom Menace have been pretty well confirmed.

  4. I agree with Paula – I will accept anything that brings Star Wars back to the big screen. They should release them every year as far as I’m concerned!

  5. I’m staying away from this. I haven’t seen a 3D movie yet that was any better than the 2D version. All I want from Lucasfilm is the original trilogy on anamorphic widescreen DVD. I take that back, the original trilogy but with the added space ship computer generated scenes.

The best 3D I’ve ever seen was Captain Eo as a kid. Nothing has been any better. How about something with better writing and less gimick?

    And get off my space-lawn!

  6. Like other people, I’m not blown away by the current crop of 3D effects in films. I mean, I loved Toy Story 3, but seeing it in 3D didn’t add anything to the experience.

If they can make it really spectacular (you know, like the spaceships are actually coming out of the screen, that kind of thing), then I’ll go. If not, well, I’m not paying exorbitant prices to see films I’ve already got on DVD (even if they are my favourite films of all time).
