Don’t look to Clone Wars for hints at comedy series

Seth Green has dropped a few hints to IGN UK about the comedy show he’s working on with Lucasfilm, including that there won’t be many similarities to The Clone Wars.

He also confirmed that the series will take place during the original trilogy and will focus “on things that are funny about the universe as opposed to the wars themselves.”

  1. I really don’t know whether to be excited about this show or worried. A comedy Star Wars show is far from what I was expecting – I think we were all kind of hoping the live-action show would be next.
Sure, the occasional Robot Chicken/Family Guy spoof is ok, but sustained over a season?

  2. But you know, to be honest, I am way more likely to watch this than I have The Clone Wars (there is not a single thing going on for me in that series) – and from what we’ve heard of the live-action, that too. Bring on the funny.

  3. Maybe, I’ll watch it because it’s Star Wars…but I kind of think that’s EXACTLY what LFL are thinking on this one – the fans will watch BECAUSE it’s Star Wars. Just seems a bit lazy, to be so obviously self-deprecating. And if it’s done badly it could demean the universe that’s been built (I know you’ll counter that they’ve already done that plenty of times already! :-p )

  4. Yeah, it’s way too late to worry about demeaning the universe.

I won’t watch (or read) something just “because it’s Star Wars.” (Okay, to a point, but it has to be a certain flavor of SW.) Hell, back to TCW: It does not appeal to me. At all. I’m not interested in the era or characters, I think inter-movie bridge stuff is a waste of time even for the OT, I’m just plain Not Interested. I don’t watch it. Same for games. Not Interested. KOTOR. Not Interested. Etc.

On the other hand, I don’t believe in taking SW too seriously, which is what a lot of people seem to be doing these days. Where’s the fun? I don’t give a damn about Anakin, Starkiller and Zayne, but I will totally tune in for the next ‘A Death Star is Born’ or ‘The Emperor’s Court’ or Tag and Bink.

So this comedy show may end up being my CW. Star Wars is ripe for silliness and mocking, and if they have the balls to do it themselves, I’m there. It might suck, but from what little we have so far, I’m hopeful.

And hell, the franchise has survived the tender attentions of Seth MacFarlane and Family Guy. I think we’ll be okay.

  5. Yep, fair point. It’s a very broad church, the SWG. When too poe-faced it’s pompous and dull, but could also fall into silliness.
Let’s see, I’d like nothing more than to eat my words – just SO want to see the live action show, all these other projects are delaying that.
