(P.S.: If you come back Monday, I have the latest Dresden Files hardcover from Jim Butcher to give away.)

  1. I just finished “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman. It’s a quick read but good.

  2. This year I picked up Jim Butcher’s other series, Codex Alera, and I’ve really enjoyed it. Fantasy, set in the milieu of a Rome-like Empire, where magic is based on command of elemental furies: air, water, fire, earth, wood and metal. Engaging characters, both human and alien. There are five books so far, beginning with Furies of Calderon, and the sixth (and final, I presume) book is due out later this year.

  3. “Religion and the Decline of Magic” by Thomas, “The Great Upheaval — America and the Birth of the Modern World 1788 — 1800” by Wink, “Here Be Dragons” by Penman, and just finished the novelization of the Star Trek movie by Foster, which made about as much sense as the movie did. Basically, all at once. Also reading around in Carl Sandburg’s “Abraham Lincoln” (combined version). Currently looking for the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series — will probably have to break down and buy it from Amazon. Waiting for Gabaldon’s “An Echo in the Bone” but that’s not due out until September.

  4. Currently reading Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. Its a good read so far. I recommend all his books.

  5. I’ve started reading something in a similar vein as the Dresden books: Lisa Shearin’s Raine Benares books. They’re more traditional fantasy than Butcher’s urban fantasy, but still lots of fun and a quick a read. Also, I just picked up Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book.” And I’m looking forward to Karen Miller’s next book in her Rogue Agents series.

  6. Reading through Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show right now, which is fun if you like Card or anthologies. Just finished DelToro’s The Strain (which was really fascinating in a Michael Chrichton kind of way) and J. Lee Martinez’s Monster (which was a lot of fun).

Also, not sci-fi or fantasy, but there’s a lot of Raymond Chandler passing before my eyes this summer, and there’s likely to be a lot more.

Oh, and Jadefire, I read the first Codex Alera but found it a tad slow… does the series pick up the pace later on? I really like Butcher’s work otherwise.

  7. Just finished “World War Z” by Max Brooks. Quite an amazing novel. I highly recommend it, as it is one of the best collections of short stories I’ve read.

I have started reading “The Strain” by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan.

  8. Doyle – I think you’d find Academ’s Fury also a bit slow at the start. The following two books pick things up a lot more from the start.

  9. I just finished Warbreaker. It was good, philosophical and political talk amongst gods, but I’m disappointed Sanderson keeps writing about gods.
