Fate of the Jedi: Outcast cover, blurb

Speak of the Devil… It’s not what I expected at all. So bright! I like that it’s a new, very bold direction… I don’t like that it looks like a basic vector trace. Hrm. And why is Ben (yes, that’s Ben on the right) wearing Lando’s shirt? Dare we go there?

There’s also jacket text, under the cut.

After a violent civil war, and the devastation wrought by the now-fallen Darth Caedus, the Galactic Alliance is in crisis — and in need. From all corners, politicians, power brokers, and military leaders converge on Coruscant for a crucial summit to restore order, negotiate differences, and determine the future of their unified worlds. But even more critical, and far more uncertain, is the future of the Jedi.

In a shocking move, Chief of State Natasi Daala orders the arrest of Luke Skywalker for failing to prevent Jacen Solo’s turn to the dark side and his subsequent reign of terror as a Sith Lord. But it’s only the first blow in an anti-Jedi backlash fueled by a hostile government and suspicious public. When Jedi Knight Valin Horn, scion of a politically influential family, suffers a mysterious psychotic break and becomes a dangerous fugitive, the Jedi become the target of a media-driven witch hunt. Facing conviction on the damning charges, Luke has only one choice. He must strike a bargain with the calculating Daala: his freedom in exchange for his exile — from Coruscant and from the Jedi Order.

Now, though forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is determined to keep history from being repeated. With his son, Ben, at his side, Luke sets out to unravel the shocking truth behind Jacen Solo’s corruption and downfall. But the secrets he uncovers among the enigmatic Force mystics of the distant world Dorin may bring his quest — and life as he knows it — to a sudden end. And all the while, another Jedi Knight, consumed by the same madness as Valin Horn, is headed for Coruscant on a fearsome mission that could doom the Jedi Order . . . and devastate the entire galaxy.

  1. Ben. The article’s title is ‘Father and Son’ and Sue said Ben was on the back earlier today.

    …Ben doesn’t have a Databank entry?

  2. I don’t know. I’m split on this cover.

I like the boldness and freshness to it. But I really love the (I don’t know the correct term) “realistic” portraits, as favored by the Japanese covers.

As for the plot blurb? I’m going to trust Aaron, but this seems a bit…complicated.

  3. I’m on the fence with the cover. Most appealing part is Aaron’s name on it.

However, I read the last paragraph, and maybe it’s the two seasons worth of X-Files I just watched, but I get this image of black oil alien parasites turning people into Dark Jedi…. makes as much sense as Daala being galactic leader…

  4. Wow, that is pretty different. If I try hard enough I think I can almost make myself “see” a bit of Mara in that version of Ben on the back. But once again we get a representation of Luke who appears to still be in his 30s. I’m with Paula – I tend to prefer the flair with which the Japanese covers have been done.

  5. the color scheme obviously shows that the artist is a Chargers fan!

but when i first saw it, it reminded me of those WPA-issued national parks posters from the 1930s.

  6. Let’s not forget that blurbs are always melodramatic and overstate things, okay?

These are abstract enough that it does at least make a point that the covers are meant to catch people’s attention and sell books, not be a realistic intrepretation of the characters. Which I’m fine with after the last couple years of quibbling over how people are too old/not old enough, blah blah blah. And at least it’s something new…

I was thinking the colors look familiar too, James, but I wouldn’t know the Chargers from [insert some other non-Michigan sports team here.]
